Do you often have greasy hair? Do you think daily washing is necessary to prevent sebum buildup? Here are the dos and don'ts for every hair type...and the ideal washing frequency.
First rule? There are no strict rules. Whether you decide to wash your hair once, twice, three, or even five times a week, the main thing is to adapt your washing routine to your hair type.
If your hair is thick and dry, it's advisable to space out your washes more than if you have fine hair. To avoid a buildup of dandruff on your scalp, it's recommended to wash your hair at least once a week, regardless of your hair type. On the other hand, there’s no benefit to shampooing it every day. In fact, the more often you wash your hair, the more you stimulate your scalp and sebaceous glands — which produce sebum — according to Belgian media outlet RTBF. Plus, you could dry out your hair, making it look duller and more fragile.
Taking care of your scalp
Have oily roots? It's best to limit washing to every other day, to avoid irritating your scalp. Between shampoos, you could absorb excess sebum with dry shampoo, so you don’t have to wet your hair.
Another quick tip: to keep your hair clean, it’s recommended not to touch it during the day, and to brush it in the evening to remove impurities and dead skin cells.
