If a military force is needed to keep the peace in Ukraine, Belgium will send soldiers.

The promise was made by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever during a virtual summit organised on Saturday by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The latter is proposing a "Coalition of the Willing" to ensure peacekeeping, if achieved, following negotiations to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

On Thursday, a meeting will be held in the United Kingdom with military leaders from countries wishing to contribute to the peacekeeping force.

Russia is already unwilling to hear about an international peacekeeping force. The conditions currently associated by Russia with a possible ceasefire are described as "unacceptable" by the Belgian Prime Minister: "In reality, they amount to a total capitulation of Ukraine, where the Zelensky regime would be replaced by a pro-Russian regime. In this case, our security situation would deteriorate dramatically," De Wever told VRT NWS.
