Woman dies under bulldozer on Italian beach

In Pinarella di Cervia, south of Ravenna on Italy's Adriatic coast, a 66-year-old teacher from Vicenza died on Saturday after being run over by a bulldozer on the beach.

The woman was on holiday with her husband and was sunbathing on the beach. She died instantly, in view of numerous other beachgoers. The bulldozer was busy levelling the beach for the summer season, but the work was not authorised. The driver of the bulldozer, a 54-year-old man from Cesena, already had a criminal record for a previous fatal traffic accident.

The mayor of Cervia confirmed that the work was illegal and that the bulldozer was not permitted on the beach, especially not during the busy weekend at the start of the tourist season. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident and the responsibility of the driver.
