Zurich Airport, Switzerland’s busiest airport, has announced that flight announcements will no longer be made in French.
According to a report by the Swiss media Tages-Anzeiger, the airport has removed French from its public announcements, now using only German and English.
This decision aligns with Zurich Airport’s "silent airport" policy, aimed at minimizing announcements to enhance passenger comfort and tranquility, as explained by airport spokesperson Livia Caluori to AFP.
"The goal of this concept is to reduce the number of announcements to the bare minimum, ensuring a quieter and more comfortable experience for our guests," she added.
Switzerland’s multilingualism is a defining feature of the country, with four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Although German is the most widely spoken, French remains dominant in certain regions.
Nathalie Berchtold, spokesperson for Swissport, the company handling ground services, clarified:
"The decision regarding the languages used for announcements rests with the airport operator or the airlines."
