In an interview with the American channel CBS, George Clooney revisited some of the themes his play Good Night and Good Luck addresses, such as freedom of press in the United States. This didn't sit well with the American president.
The famous actor is currently promoting his play, adapted from his own film Good Night and Good Luck (2005), as reported by Belgian media RTBF. Guest on the show “60 Minutes”, aired on CBS, Clooney took the opportunity to draw parallels between the film's plot and the situation in his own country. "Governments don't like freedom of press. They never have. And that goes for conservatives, progressives, or whatever side you are on," he states.
Journalism must triumph
To highlight the importance of journalists' profession, especially during a current tense political climate, he adds: "When the other three powers fail, then the judiciary, the executive, and the legislative powers let us down, the fourth must triumph." Furthermore, the American actor-director mentioned the agreement reached between Donald Trump and the channel ABC. To avoid a defamation trial, ABC will pay 15 million to the resident of the White House: a presenter had dared to address the subject of the E. Jean Carroll case, in which Trump was convicted of sexual assaults. "We see this idea of using the government to scare, pay off, or manipulate media companies to diminish the power of journalists at work."
And where is the support for "Sleepy Joe"?
The remarks didn't sit well with the President of the United States, who wrote on his network Truth Social: “Why would the now highly discredited show '60 Minutes' dedicate an episode to George Clooney, a second-rate movie star and failed pseudo-political expert?” He also took the opportunity to point out that Clooney had called for Joe Biden's withdrawal from the presidency after supporting him throughout his campaign. “He fought fiercely for the election of Sleepy Joe (Biden, ed), then dropped him like a dog right after the debate.”
