Scientists have uncovered strange skeletons hidden within Egyptian pyramids.
While these monuments are traditionally known as the final resting places of pharaohs, researchers have unearthed skeletal remains at the Tombos archaeological site in northern Sudan that show signs of intense physical labor.
This physical evidence suggests that the individuals buried there were likely laborers rather than members of the elite class.
“Pyramid tombs, once thought to be the final resting place of the most elite, may have also included low-status high-labor staff. Across cemetery areas and tomb types, [our analysis] suggests a complex landscape of physically active and less-physically active people,” experts explained.
Tombos became a key stronghold of the Egyptian empire following the conquest of Nubia around 1500 BCE. The site is believed to have been primarily inhabited by low-ranking officials, artisans, scribes, and other working-class individuals.
