A study by Apur (Paris Urbanism Workshop) has just been unveiled. It shows that in the event of a natural disaster or blockade, Paris's food reserves would run out within 5 to 7 days.
If the French capital had to face unprecedented flooding or a road blockade, due to insufficient food storage capacities, its inhabitants would quickly face famine. It's the City of Paris, as part of its "resilience strategy" launched in 2022 to anticipate, with the prefecture, various crisis scenarios, which initiated this study. A first of its kind in France, reports the media France Info.
Focus on storage
While the Covid crisis had already highlighted the limitations of the city of Paris in terms of available warehouses, the aim is to find other storage spaces to be able to feed Parisians for at least 100 days. "The interest is to identify what can be stored locally, to know how to continue to supply the capital in case of disaster, such as a Seine flood, or a road or railway blockade," emphasises Alexandre Labasse, director of Apur.
